Your Guide to Squeezing the Most Efficiency Out of Your HVAC System

During the winter months, the cost of heating your home can be substantial. Here are a few tips for lowering your bills by getting more efficiency out of your HVAC system.

  • Remove barriers to return vents. If you have a forced-air system, make sure that you haven’t inadvertently placed objects in front of the return vents, such as furniture, blankets, or clothing. Keeping these vents unobstructed can greatly enhance the efficiency of your furnace.
  • Seal air leaks. Over time, new cracks can appear in your home’s walls. Make sure that these are sealed with caulk or weather stripping tape so that no air leaks out.
  • Clean or replace filters. One of the most common causes of HVAC system inefficiency is a dirty filter that is obstructing air flow. Your furnace filter needs to be changed at least once every one to three months, depending on the type of filter used.
  • Maintain your ductwork. Dust, pollen and other pollutants can easily build up in your ductwork over the course of a year. For this reason, it is a good idea to get your ductwork cleaned as needed and replaced when necessary. This will improve airflow and save you money in the long run.
