Upgrading Your Cooling System? HVAC Concepts You Should Know

You don’t have to be an air conditioning expert to upgrade your cooling equipment — at Beyer Boys, we have the expertise part covered — but it is helpful to have at least a basic understanding of what an A/C upgrade involves, and what some of the common terms that you might hear mean. So here is a brief overview of HVAC concepts you should know when you upgrade.

How Air Conditioners Work There are several parts to an air-conditioning system that work together to cool your home. The substance that actually provides the ability to cool is called refrigerant. A refrigerant is a liquid that has a very low boiling point. When it passes through the A/C system’s evaporator coil, it boils from a liquid into a gas. Since boiling requires heat, the coil absorbs heat from the air, producing the cooling effect.

The air handler then circulates the cold air through the house. Now in gas form, the refrigerant travels outside to the compressor, which pressurizes it; under pressure, the refrigerant turns back into a liquid. It passes through a condenser coil, which allows the pressurized refrigerant to release its excess heat into the outdoor air before heading back indoors to start the cycle again.

Terms to Know

  • A ton is a measure of how much cooling capacity an A/C has. One ton is equal to 12,000 BTUs per hour.
  • A BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is the amount of cooling power needed to cool one pound of water by one degree.
  • Heat gain is the amount of heat your home gains from its surroundings. Also known as a load calculation, figuring out the heat gain of your home is important for determining how many tons of A/C you require.
  • SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a number that indicates how energy efficient an air conditioner is (on average, over the course of a year). The SEER number represents how many BTUs are produced from every watt hour of electricity.
