These Winterizing Tips Will Keep You Comfortable Through San Antonio’s Cold Snaps

Once you’ve pulled your mittens and scarf out of the back of your closet, you’re all set for the cooler months. But, your house also needs protection and care when the weather turns chilly. Is your San Antonio home prepared? Here are some easy winterizing tips to keep your home comfortable throughout the cooler months ahead.

Block leaks

Find indoor leaks by holding a lit stick of incense near drafty areas such as door and window frames, recessed lighting and electrical outlets. Once identified, block the leaks with appropriate materials.

  • Install door sweeps under exterior doors.
  • Apply tacky rope or caulking to drafty areas around doors and windows.
  • Install outlet gaskets in electrical outlets located on outer walls.

Clean Gutters

Keeping your gutters clean and unblocked will reduce the possibility of flooding and water damage to your home. After all the leaves have fallen, use a scraper or spatula to remove them and other debris from your gutters.

  • Rinse your gutters with a garden hose.
  • Look for misaligned pipes and leaks and fix them.
  • Ensure your downspouts are delivering water at least 10 feet away from your home’s foundation.

Clean Ducts

If your central heating ductwork is not well-connected and insulated, your home will not be energy efficient – it can lose up to 60 percent of its hot air before it reaches a vent. Clean your duct every couple of years by vacuuming thoroughly.

Check Your Furnace

Turn your furnace on before cool weather descends, to ensure that it is working properly – if not, call in an HVAC expert to have it repaired.

  • Have your furnace inspected, cleaned and tuned up each year.
  • Change furnace filters monthly throughout the winter.
  • Wash reusable electronic or electrostatic filters regularly.

Reverse Ceiling Fan Direction

By reversing the summer operation direction, your fan will keep you more comfortable by pushing warm air downward, forcing it to re-circulate. Turn the fan on; when looking up, the blades should be rotating clockwise.
