Replace or Just Repair Your HVAC System? Tips to Help You Decide

Is your HVAC system getting old? Are you having problems that require frequent repairs? If you answered yes, it may be time to consider a new heating and air conditioning system for your home.

Here are some tips to help you decide if you should repair or replace your existing HVAC system.

How Old Is Your System?

The average life of most boilers and furnaces is 15 years. For heat pumps and air conditioners, it’s 10 to 12 years. If your system meets or exceeds this, it’s best to think about a new system. Repairs may be a cheaper upfront solution, but problems will continue with an older system. Frequent repairs can end up costing as much as a new system.

Installing a high-efficiency Energy Star system will save energy and money. Energy Star equipment is more energy efficient than standard models: boilers, up to 5 percent and furnaces, up to 15 percent more efficient than models with the current minimum AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency); heat pumps and air conditioners, up to 20 percent more efficient than models with the minimal HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor) and SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio).

Signs of Trouble:

  • higher utility bills (for no reason)
  • system is loud or making strange noises
  • some rooms are too cold or too hot
  • your home has excessive dust
  • your home is too dry or too damp
  • blower turns on and off too frequently

Should you replace the entire system?

Most HVAC systems consist of two parts: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. Split-systems are designed to work together and must be matched in energy efficiency ratios to work properly.

  • Heating – By law, new furnaces must meet a minimum AFUE rating of 78 percent. Energy Star models must be 90 percent or higher.
  • Cooling – cooling efficiency is measured by SEER. By law, new heat pumps and air conditioning systems must meet a minimum SEER rating of 13 percent. Energy Star models must be 14.5 percent or higher.
