If You Live In San Antonio, You Can’t Get By Without Air Conditioning; Avoid These Common Air Conditioner Problems

For South Texas homeowners, air conditioners are essential to daily comfort and well-being. If yours starts acting up, it can be frustrating and uncomfortable. The Beyer Boys are here to help. We’ve got a few common air conditioner problems to discuss, along with some troubleshooting tips.

General advice:

  • First, make sure your thermostat is set correctly to “cool.”
  • A system that won’t turn on or doesn’t create enough cool air may only need to be cleaned. Dust and dirt naturally accumulate, and without regular maintenance and cleaning, they can reduce efficiency, and even stop the system from functioning.

The system doesn’t turn on:

  • Check for tripped breakers or blown fuses on the electric panel.
  • Ensure the main power switch is turned on. Check the power switch on the outdoor unit, and the disconnect switch in the metal box near the compressor.

The air conditioner makes your house too cold:

  • This is usually a thermostat issue. It could be set incorrectly, or installed in a location where it can’t accurately measure the indoor temperature.

The air handler is noisy:

  • Is the air handler squealing? You may have an older, belt-driven system. The belt connecting the blower and motor may have slipped. Turn off the unit and see if you can slip it back.
  • If your system is direct-drive, it could be worn motor bearings. If this is the case, it’s time to call for service.

Water leaks from the air conditioner:

  • A/C units create condensation as part of the cooling process. This moisture collects in the drain pan, and is carried away by the condensate drain. If it’s leaking, there could be a clog or torn tube.
  • Make sure the condensate pump is plugged in and receiving power.
  • Unscrew the check valve, in front of the drain tube. Look for obstructions, such as algae. You can clean it with a pipe cleaner and solution of bleach and water.
  • Ensure ice hasn’t formed to block the tube, and that the filter is clean.
